Canine wellness is paramount to the success of the Guide Dog program. The Wellness Center houses a Veterinary Clinic, the Puppy Development Center, Isolation Facilities, and Kennels.
Guide Dogs of the Desert is located just north of Palm Springs in Whitewater, California. The campus is situated on both sides of Dillon Road.
The south side of the campus consists of administration offices for operations, development, and training. Adjacent to that is the dormitory, which accommodates the students during their 28-day stay at the campus. Students are provided with private rooms and common areas such as a living room, a media room equipped with a computer and internet access, laundry facilities, and a large dining room where students and trainers enjoy fresh-cooked meals by our in-house chef.
The Santulli Auditorium was funded by and named after Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. Santulli and houses the auditorium where graduation ceremonies are held. It has capacity for 493 occupants. It faces east and offers amazing views of the valley.
On the north side of Dillon Road is the Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foundation Wellness Center, the Puppy Development Center, Isolation Facilities, and Kennels. The Wellness Center houses a fully functioning veterinary facility, pre- and post-op surgery center, state-of-the-art x-ray equipment, and grooming facilities. This is where the puppies and guide dogs in training receive their physical examinations or any necessary medical care. Puppies are housed in the Puppy Development Center prior to being placed with their puppy raisers. The Puppy Development Center is completely separate from the Wellness Center so that disease cannot be spread to the puppies from the older dog population. The Kennels house the guide dogs in training as well as any other dogs that happen to be called back to the facility. The Kennels accommodate up to 30 dogs at a time. For additional details on the Wellness Center, the Puppy Development Center, the Kennels, or any of the Canine Care programs, please explore the Programs section of this site.
We invite you to come tour the facilities; simply contact us at 760-329-6257 to schedule a tour. Tours are held Thursdays at 2 p.m.
