ABOUT
Guide Dogs of the Desert
STAFF
& VOLUNTEERS
The Staff:
Guide Dogs of the Desert currently has 18 full-time employees. These numbers fluctuate slightly depending on whether classes are in session, generally increasing from October through May.
Guide Dogs of the Desert also offers a Trainer Apprenticeship program. This program lasts a minimum of three years as required by California regulations. It contains a combination of instruction through reading and practical application culminating in a three-part examination give by the California State Board of Guide Dogs for the Blind.
The Volunteers:
Approximately 300 volunteers provide a wide range of support services for Guide Dogs of the Desert. Over 120 individuals from Alaska to New England to Florida are serving as volunteer puppy raisers for our school at any given time. Nearly fifty commercial and private pilots, and active and retired flight attendants, serve as couriers flying our puppies and dogs -- and students -- across the country.
A specially trained team of volunteers provides round-the-clock care and monitoring for a period of several weeks after each new litter is born and before they are assigned to puppy raiser homes.
Volunteers are responsible for giving guided tours of the school facility. They also represent Guide Dogs of the Desert at speaking engagements; they man the booths at Village
Fest and other various events as needed. Volunteers are also called upon to help with light deskwork, especially bulk mailings.
